Two Man Saw is clearly the name of my next doom/drone metal bluegrass musical saw/theremin band.

On this day in 1920, the film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was released. Back in 2005 - 2007 I collaborated on a soundtrack for this silent film. Here's a link to the full post I made in 2007.

The full movie with both soundtracks can be downloaded from

Project details, individual tracks, notes, etc.:

Some day I'll screen this here or out there somewhere.

An inquiry on a list asked for suggestions of any work recorded using contact mics. This was my set of selections from my recorded work with contact microphones.

A series I did with contact-mic equipped cello bow and electric upright bass.

Ley Line Turbine - 15min30seconds. Contact mic, carotid pulse, Akai Headrush E2 looper, Moogs.

Machete - 9min19sec. 2-handed machete, contact microphone, Moog pedals.

It's been so long since I used a tuner that the largest block of time in prepping for last week's recording of a drone in E was finding where a tuner was in the studio.

Good: found great-grandfather's pocket watch and wound it for a recording project. Mildly aggravating: ribbon contact mic isn't in main box, first piezo contact mic is defunct, other contact mics are probably with the ribbon. Will look later, should be around here. More annoying than I expected: the pocket watch, of course, isn't something I can turn on and off: it just. keeps. ticking.

MonotonE - 8min48sec. Zeta Crossover electric upright bass, E-Bow. Recorded with Marantz PMD-620 field recorder.

Created by importing the two tracks "do" and "re" into Audacity, setting "do" as Left and "re" as RIght, then selecting blocks of audio visually and cutting and pasting back and forth between the two tracks until I'd reached a satisfactory result. No other processing other than a Gysinian cut up as described.

I was invited to play Tar Heel Music Festival today as part of a trio. We'll be at Jessee's Coffee in Carrboro from 5pm to 5:45pm. Music from many other bands at the Cave, Local 506, and Nightlight until past midnight. I'm looking forward to Gmish, a local klezmer band, among others.

Also today, the second Illogicon at which some of my friends including [ profile] rdansky are invited guests and speakers, and many others are attending is in Cary last night through Sunday. I don't actually have anything in particular I want to ask Tim Powers, although you'd think I would. [ profile] maegwynn and I went last night.

was quite good, and I enjoyed the show's performance. Thought the sound design was unobtrusive and faded into the background, which was the goal so I call that a success.
