I just arrived at my destination and decided to wait for the current song to finish before getting out of my car - in a video game.

I'd just finished (checks save screen) 39.12 hours burning through the storyline of a AAA title and watched the closing credits (yes, I actually do that) and had upgraded and bought everything I could buy in the game and decided to drive the character back to the starting base as a wind-down and to save the game at that location, a return to the beginning sort of thing. And I do that kind of thing with music in cars in real life - it may not _be_ me in a lot of ways in a game, but it's still me.

Walking up to a music venue’s entrance, woman talking with the doorman:
“Any of the bands tonight reggae music? Cause I don’t like that.”
“No, ma’am.”
“How much to get in?”
“Fifteen dollars, ma’am.”
“FIFTEEN DOLLARS! I’m never paying fifteen dollars for a show!”
*walks away*
*comes back*
“Can you tell me other music venues in this city? Ones that don’t play reggae.”

I saw nine bands at ProgDay XIX/2013 Labor Day weekend. Here's a few photos of a few of the bands.

A really even-toned set of bands, all great stuff.

Friday
Rob Martino (Chapman Stick), Local 506 Friday

Note: website has not been updated to reflect the actual playing order that happened.

Saturday
Mavara (Iran) - Solid.
Miriodor (Canada)
Corima (US) - Like Magma.
Oblivion Sun (US)

Sunday
Out Of The Beardspace (US)
Thank You Scientist (US)
Herd Of Instinct (US)
simakDialog (Indonesia) - Loved this band.

Stupid heavy storm shut down simakDialog after an hour of play, but the day was ahead of schedule and so we got almost a full hour. Went home, watched the creek rise a lot.

two man saw

Two Man Saw is clearly the name of my next doom/drone metal bluegrass musical saw/theremin band.

I was invited to play Tar Heel Music Festival today as part of a trio. We'll be at Jessee's Coffee in Carrboro from 5pm to 5:45pm. Music from many other bands at the Cave, Local 506, and Nightlight until past midnight. I'm looking forward to Gmish, a local klezmer band, among others.

Also today, the second Illogicon at which some of my friends including [livejournal.com profile] rdansky are invited guests and speakers, and many others are attending is in Cary last night through Sunday. I don't actually have anything in particular I want to ask Tim Powers, although you'd think I would. [livejournal.com profile] maegwynn and I went last night.

ProgDay XVII, Hopscotch II, SparkCon 6, Signalfest 6, all on consecutive weekends in September. To paraphrase Brody in the film Jaws, "I think you're gonna need a bigger month."

Saw an improvisational music show a while back. I've seen the performer before and thought they were decent overall. This last time I saw them, during their between-set patter they popped out with:

"You think I practice this stuff at home? No, I just do this when I'm booked to play."

That annoyed the heck out of me. (Actually, the sneering tone annoyed me more than the stated fact.) If I can't tell that you don't rehearse and I enjoy the show anyway, that's one thing. If you openly proclaim that you care little enough for your audience to rub their noses in the fact, that's another thing. I haven't been back to see that act since.

Wednesday:
* opened my mail from the day before and found the posters for the HASTAC Conference,

* email first thing announcing the completion and release of the CT-Collective project Paper Music that I contributed the "Tarot Talking" piece for,

* accomplished useful work,

* M and I went to the first RTP 2.0 gathering of tech-type people in the Triangle [1] over in Durham, caught up with friends I haven't seen in a long time,

* I went to a private party afterward, talked Mieville and Barker for a while,

* opened my mail from today to find the rare action figure of Yomiko Readman finally arrived today.

Of *course* it did.

[1] I hate name tags. The next time someone hands me a sticky "My Name Is..." tag to write on and slap on my shirt, I'm considering writing in "...Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
