On this day in 1920, the film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was released. Back in 2005 - 2007 I collaborated on a soundtrack for this silent film. Here's a link to the full post I made in 2007.

M and I went to see a sneak preview of Sweeney Todd at the Rialto. Short: Tim Burton does the Hammer Films buckets of blood treatment for the already gory revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical.

M and I went to Mission Valley to see The Golden Compass. Overall, a good adaptation of the first novel of Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, a little slow in spots, but decent and recommended. Gorgeous. Minor spoilers inside. you had me at 'giant armored polar bears'  )

Friday night I went to the Galaxy in Cary to see I'm Not There. A nonlinear biopic of Bob Dylan using seven different actors and actresses playing seven different aspects of Dylan and shot in different styles and manner, recalling Warhol or Kubrick in one and Tim Burton's Big Fish in another, I thought it was inventive and worthwhile. Has some flaws, doesn't work perfectly throughout, but is on the whole daring and magnificent and clever and cool. minor spoilers within )

Went to Galaxy for When the Road Bends: Tales of a Gypsy Caravan. The film has been described as Buena Vista Social Club for Romany music and culture, following four bands from India, Macedonia, Romania, and Spain on a six-week tour of the US and with backstories in their homes and home countries. card & trailers )
